Specifying the relationship between land use/land cover change and dryness in central Vietnam from 2000 to 2019 using Google Earth Engine

Land use/land cover (LULC) change and climate are thought to be closely related mutually influential, especially in contexts where land is converted for urban expansion or agriculture. We represent a first attempt specify the relationship between LULC dryness region of Vietnam that profoundly affected by change. Using temperature–vegetation index (TVDI), we specified relationships changes underway Vietnam’s Ba river basin, one largest systems South Central Coast. Google Earth Engine, extracted use data from Landsat images calculated TVDI values Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 2000 2019. found, first, agricultural area deforestation rose 7.2% 2.4% annually, respectively. These were driven economic development, rising crop prices, illegal logging, wildfires, emergence new areas. Second, areas classified driest intervals (dry very dry) occupied 57% basin 2019, 70% which was lands 20% other (mainly bare lands). categories expanded at an average rate 0.08% 0.1% per year. Moreover, 90% as “very wet” “wet” forest. observed strong TVDI. Climate thus appear propelling basin’s toward increasing dryness, suggesting need policies reduce expand forests while developing more adaptive sustainable livelihoods.
